This was my last week here at the MIX lab before heading back home and it was overall and amazing experience which I will forever be grateful for. On Monday the kids were given their last day of instruction with the Unity game engine, they were taught how to use the Timeline feature, learning how to activate and de-activate objects, pause the timeline, and un-pause the timeline with a trigger object. Also learning how to implement some pre-made scripts into the game. During after care we went down to the production shop to make Bluetooth speakers from scratch, we did have a couple of issues with the box being a very snug fit but by the end of the day everyone had a functioning Bluetooth speaker.

On Tuesday the kids got some more Endstar training learning how to use some of the more advanced features such as NPC interaction, afterwards we had the kids go down to a different room where a guest speaker taught them about game design and what it is. All the kids did activates relating to game design such as, level design, story creation, theming, and mechanics. during aftercare we took the Bluetooth speakers the kids had made the day before and decorated them in the Fab Lab, there were laser cut faceplates and stands for the speakers that came in a variety of colors and designs. There were also plenty of drawing supplies for the kids to further customize their speakers, we also got the 3d printed model of our heads that we had scanned last week which was very cool to see.

On Wednesday we had another guest speaker come in to teach the kids, this time teaching them how to use Blender. The speaker taught the kids how to add objects to the scene and how to manipulate them such as scaling them, moving them, rotating them, etc. The kids also learnt how to use and create materials for different objects in Blender along with how to use edit mode to make some more advanced and detailed edits such as adding a chimney to the roof of a house without needing to create a new object. During aftercare we had another movie day where we finished up How to Train Your Dragon and briefly started How to Train Your Dragon 2 after some technical issues with the movie audio.

On Thursday unfortunately I felt under the weather, so I wasn’t able to make it into the internship, but I heard that the kids got some more time to work on their projects. The projects of which they had their families come in on Friday to show what they had been working on throughout the camp. It was amazing to see all the families show up so enthusiastically for their kids to see what they had made, by the end of the time we had 40 different people come in to look at what their child, sibling, or friend had made. There was no aftercare on Friday, so we just debriefed and discussed how the camp went, what we thought was good and what we needed to improve for next year.

Finally on Saturday I got ready in the morning to fly out back to Telluride.

I again this week wasn’t able to do all too much outside of the internship since the extreme heat of over 105 every day but I was able to make some new amazing foods. Being a pasta dish with a tomato sauce and a Hungarian dish called lecso.

My final thoughts on the internship, it was overall amazing I loved every single moment of it, and I am incredibly grateful for having had this opportunity given to me. I also incredibly excited for my next internship at U Utah in a week!
