General Idea of what Anca’s Lab does.

My second week at Rowher Lab has concluded. Starting the week off we had a lab meeting to set up the agenda, everyone getting there own project or continuing previous ones. I was given a couple different options, choosing to focus more on phage therapy and its application. The implications of my choice mean that I will most likely spend more time away from the Rohwer Lab and participate in Anca’s Lab – Anca being Forest’s wife. Her lab is specifically treating CF (Cystic Fibrosis) with phage therapy, considering the possible draw backs and effects it can have patients. This all being in the future let me refocus on what I actually did during the week. In continuation of training up the new interns we restarted the plaque assay process to not only show them how to do it but also to enrich large quantities of phage. The phage will be used in the DNA extraction process, and the resulting product being used for sequencing. After completing these processes I’ll either be given my own personal project or be able to follow what goes on in Anca’s Lab.

This is a ladder to identify the DNA fragments length in the process of gel electrophoresis.

Generally my weekends have been pretty quiet, I haven’t had a ton to do with the beach being relatively from where I’m staying so I’ve been trying some new things. I have picked up dribbling and will jump into some of the pick-up game I see at the local soccer field. I try to study for the up coming SAT but it’s definitely not my favorite thing to do but its still enjoyable. The book that I’ve been reading for our lab book club is interesting to say the least with its rather sensual scenes that I don’t especially care for but its supposedly going to get better when its main plot about the singularity get brought into the picture so I look forward to it. Also if your thing about black holes and singularities that’s not correct it refers to the advancement of AI to the point of human intelligence (I also got this wrong). I continue to hit the gym at six every morning, though in California it feels like I’m walking around in a bowl of soup which reminds me of Florida. Anyhow, San Diego has provided fun new experiences that will continue to be a part of me for life.
