This week, I began taking on more responsibilities and working more independently. One of the highlights was being trusted to clean, stain, and wash our cells with little to no supervision. After inducing primary senescence in the cells last week, we were ready to take a select few cultures to stain and image. The other cultures will be used next week to induce secondary senescence in normal LF1 cells. Not only did I stain them, but I also helped calculate the molar amounts in the treatment drugs and color stain. I appreciated the chance to apply what I’ve learned in a real research context. It’s one thing to read about a protocol, but it’s another to troubleshoot it when something doesn’t go as planned.

Additionally, I began building more complicated models with code. One project took me three days of troubleshooting and was incredibly complex. The next step in our computational project is to build another machine learning model that takes images of hundreds of cells to make and cross-examine a multitude of parameters to eventually give an output that separates each cell proportionally onto an equally sized array so that we may further process each cell. I’m enjoying coding much more than I thought I would, especially now that Anthony allowed me to use AI once we got past the first project.

I spent most of the week working, but in my free time, I worked out with my roommates at the campus gym and went to pilates classes with a high school student summer discount. We played some more volleyball this week, and it’s a great way to meet new people since people walking by will just jump in to join. There are so many things to see, from cute theaters to thrift shops. There were also many flea markets to attend, and on my Saturday off, I went and explored Wayland Square (a cute little shopping center). I’m very excited for next week and look forward to new challenges and meeting new people.
