The second week of my internship is now done, and boy was it so much more than the first week. This week we got started working with the kids on Monday where we first got them setup working with Endstar. Getting the kids working with Endstar was not without its own issues many of the kids had issues logging into their accounts or creating new accounts to work with Endstar, despite the constant arising of issues we managed to be able to solve all the issues by collaborating between all the camp counselors and the guest instructor. After we had all the issues resolved the instructor started teaching the kids and walking them through how to use Endstar. Once, it hit 1pm all the kids went home except for the aftercare kids who stay until 5pm instead. With the aftercare kids we went on a full building tour then we just hung out and played on a switch that the university has.
On Tuesday we started work with the kids on Unreal Engine to create an environment to put on the volume (A large LED screen that is used for movie backgrounds). We had a guest instructor come in to help the kids learn it, and once again just like with Endstar we had a multitude of issues getting kids logged in and working with Unreal. A couple of the issues we had were kids forgetting their passwords or not knowing how to make an account, another major issue we also had was some kids needed to install something for Unreal to work so we also had to get IT to enter admin credentials to those computers so the kids could get to work. Once we had all the kids working in Unreal it was smooth sailing, the instructor started off with teaching the kids how to create their own level and mold the landscape into what they wanted, he then showed them how to make cubes and change the materials of those cubes to simulate water in the scene. After all the kids had gone home and it was just the aftercare kids, we all went and did the Dreamscape VR experience we did both the education one and the entertainment one. Once we were all done with the Dreamscape we went back to the aftercare room and just hanged out.
On Wednesday the kids continued working on Unreal Engine as the guest instructor showed them how to add free assets to their scene, other than that it was working time for the kids to finish up their scenes. Then with the aftercare kids we were supposed to build Bluetooth speakers, but we just ended playing Heads Up because of a miscommunication issue causing us to have to reschedule to Monday next week.
On Thursday we all went downstairs to the volume and the kids who wanted to have their scene put up got to. It was super cool to see all the work these kids had put in being shown on the volume. After we went through all the scenes we went back to the room had the kids split up into groups and created their own board games from scratch. Finally, with the aftercare kids we went to the fabrication lab and created shadow puppets from laser cut pieces of cardboard, and we also all got 3d scans of our heads. Finally, after finishing up out shadow puppets at the fab lab we all went back to the aftercare room, and we played Ping Pong and Cornhole.
On Friday we got started working in and learning how to use Unity, we again had a guest instructor come in and teach the kids. This time we had very little issues getting kids logged into Unity which was amazing. The first thing we had the kids learn in Unity was how to add different 3d shapes into the scene, we had them add in three different objects of their choosing. We then taught them how to create materials and add them onto the objects so they can change the color of their objects. Afterwards we went ahead and taught them how to import their own packages form the asset store. We had them all import their own packages and the 3d player controller which then we taught them how to replace the default avatar for the player controller with their own custom one. After all the other kids had gone home and it was only the aftercare kids left, we went over to the large movie theater and watched The Lego Movie and How to Train Your Dragon.
My ability to do thing outside of my internship has been somewhat limited because of the extreme heat, though I have managed to cook some amazing meals some of which were a creamy tomato soup and a creamy carbonara.
