I am pleased to have started my internship in physical chemistry at the University of Houston. This Week has just blown by with so many new things. I never knew that I could learn so much in such a short amount of time. The campus has been so cool to walk around on and explore. I arrived on Saturday of last week and had the program orientation on Sunday. Then for Monday Tuesday and Wednesday, we were offered special tours and seminars. I got to see the Texas Center for Superconductivity and learn all about how they make superconductors. Wednesday afternoon I had an introduction to the actual lab that I am working at. I am working under Professor Baldelli and Sarah Ortiz Who both are extremely nice and welcoming to me. They showed me everything in the lab and introduced to me my summer project. My project is to create thin metal films using thermal evaporation and my goal is to find the best way to create the purest film. Yesterday on Saturday I worked the thermal evaporator completly by myself, but It did have a malfunction with the QCM so the film didn’t turn out the best.

Outside of the Lab, I have been going to the Campus Wellness and Recreation Center which has a huge gym, pools, and many other activities to do. Me and the other boys here for the program all got memberships for the rec center so we could go together. The only downside is that the Rec Center is on the other side of campus but the walk is quite nice. I also like to just chill and relax in my dorm at Cullen Oaks. I have made myself comfortable and have a bunch of snacks. The dining hall is super cool and serves so actually decent food. And I have already made the habit of going to Chick-fil-A every lunch that I can. Half of the restaurants and amenities on campus are closed for the summer which is a bit disappointing but from what is open it has been great. I can’t wait for week 2!
