Hello Everyone
Welcome to Week 5’s post
This week was extremely slow at the Rainbow Youth Center, but my executive director lent me a whole box of workbooks.
These consisted of books to improve Social skills in children
As they were cut into four chapters, I only read the first 2 in each chapter
Chapter one
Listening, which included games such as Stand Up and Sit Down, a game that focused on listening. Chapter two was games, all about following directions. While Chapter 3 is all about problem solving, Chapter 4 is about flexibility. The book explains each activity and its importance in a child’s life, and why a child needs to learn these skills. This book allowed me to see deeper into the mind of a child and understand the importance of being a mentor and a person to guide the children, and how building these relationships change the pathway for the child. This social skills book allowed me to see how a child will morph and how we see that just by someone’s presence.
Another book was “Teen’s regulation workbook”. The book was more of a book a consumer would use to handle emotions. The book was fun to look through, so instead, I thought of the book from a therapist’s standpoint. As I was reading this book, it allowed me to think about the idea of emotions and brought me back to our emotions section in our psychology textbook. I was able to put a lot together in this book, and as I was reading, everything came at me, and I picked everything up extremely quickly. The whole book allowed me to understand myself more, not just my emotions, but also my character and who I am in society.
So far, these books hold a lot of shared information, and the other books I read had the same information as the books I talked about, but the books I spoke about had a lot more that impacted me.
I worked with the kids at the Rainbow Youth Center, and finally finished my long list of activities for week 6. This week we also got a presentation all about Two-Spirit and how the term came to light. Thanks to our mental health outreach specialist, they explained the topic and the history behind the term Two spirit and how the history in the social systems of indigenous people.
So far, where I live has been awesome, and while I have been living in Durango, I got to experience living with the people here and I got to meet a lot of the people in the neighborhood. The house is so close to everywhere in Durango and the entire living space is so nice to be in. The final week is approaching, and I am already feeling sad about this week and week 6
Thank you so much
