05 Jul Frasier Institute of Spinal Recover Week One
This week at my internship was a perfect mix of deep clinical learning and unforgettable experiences. As I get more comfortable in the environment, I am finding myself completely fascinated by how much strategy and science goes into patient recovery.
My main focus this week was conducting patient observations and diving into a specific project centered on trunk functions during sitting. It has been eye-opening to study how core stability impacts something as seemingly simple as sitting down. Breaking down the biomechanics of the trunk helped me better understand how we support patients building up their foundational strength.
One of the bigger challenges I faced this week was introducing patients to new equipment designed to assist their rehab. It can be intimidating for a patient to try a new tool, and it requires a lot of patience, clear communication, and encouragement to help them feel safe. Navigating those hesitant moments taught me a lot about the “human side” of therapy—it’s not just about the science, it’s about building trust.
Easily the highlight of my week outside the clinic was getting to attend the Louisville City FC vs. Hartford Athletic pro soccer game! Being able to watch elite athletes compete in person was an amazing experience, especially while I’m actively studying sports movement and rehabilitation. It was the perfect way to recharge.
If I had to sum up this week in one word, it would be fascination. From the intricate details of trunk stabilization to seeing high-level athletic movement on the soccer pitch, I am realizing just how wide and exciting this field really is. I’m heading into next week more motivated than ever!
