05 Jul Akira Smith, UCSB Bob Miller Lab, Week 1

Hi everyone!

I’ve officially arrived in Isla Vista, California, where I’ll be spending the next several weeks as a marine biology intern at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I’m incredibly excited to begin this opportunity in Bob Miller’s lab, where the research focuses on the ecology and conservation of California’s iconic kelp forests. The lab studies how these underwater ecosystems support marine biodiversity, how they change over time, and how scientists can better monitor and protect them in the face of environmental challenges such as climate change and human impacts.

My internship officially begins on July 6th, where I’ll be working under the mentorship of Kaitlyn Caldow. Her work focuses on marine biodiversity monitoring and analyzing underwater imagery to better understand marine communities and ecosystem health. Throughout the internship, I’ll be assisting with her current research project while gaining hands-on experience with the techniques and technology that marine scientists use to study the ocean. I’m looking forward to learning not only about marine ecology but also about the research process itself and what it’s like to work in a professional scientific lab.

Although I’ve only been in Isla Vista for about three days, I’ve been able to explore UCSB’s campus, indulge in some fourth of July hot dogs and being able to see my aunt and uncle.

Moving into my apartment on July 2nd, I realized that all of my roommates had already moved out, leaving me with the entire apartment to myself. The apartment felt a little empty at first, but it didn’t take long before I settled in and started enjoying the freedom and independence of having my own space. I quickly learned that moving into a new apartment involves buying a lot more everyday necessities than I ever expected. After several shopping trips, I was finally able to organize everything and unpack my belongings.

Right now, I’m especially grateful for the beautiful sunny weather (even if the fog likes to roll in now and then) and for the incredible opportunity to spend my summer learning from experienced marine biologists. I’m excited to officially begin my research next week, meet everyone in the lab, and continue sharing updates as I learn more about kelp forests, marine biodiversity, and the research happening here at UCSB. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store!
