Yakelin Jorge Ramos- Energy and Geoscience institute at U Utah, Week 1

I got some EGI merch!

My first week went in a flash and by all means was wonderful and interesting. I came into Salt Lake City during the weekend before the beginning of my internship, and I met my wonderful host family who gave me a tour of their home although I arrived late at night. They took me out to go see their Ranch two hours away from SLC for a day, which was an amazing time out. On Monday I stayed home since EGI was celebrating their juneteenth that Monday.

On Tuesday I met my wonderful professor Bry as she prefers to be called, and she gave us a tour of the floor where some work would be done and with this came the introduction of our Office cubicles. But this wasn’t the only thing that she showed us, she gave us a looks around her office and some minerals that she has kept over the course of her work and there is where we got to see some cool rock, marble, and crystal. She encouraged us to go and explore campus and see what there is around, along with letting us know that she wants us to feel independent with out own projects and to feel free to change whatever and take on what we were curious about!

Bry gave in depth explanations on each rock she had in here and interesting facts about the value of these rocks.

Bry gave me a packet of an outline of what we were going to do for the internship. I got started on doing was some background research to get familiarized with the topics I was going to deal with. I looked up maps and researched all about critical minerals that are in Guatemala and looked at the places of the Ancient Mayan ruins. This week was a nice seg-way into getting familiar with material that I had barely heard of, and it was an amazing way of getting to know my mentor better as I talked to her and because of talking to her she said she was also willing to show me how to use a telescope to look at space. By the end of the week I was told about the next phase of my internship that would come: Lab work. I’m very excited for what else is to come and what other adventures I will partake on since this is only the beginning!

Bry gave me some eggs from her chicken coop!
