Kaila Rebolledo Unda – UCSD George Lab – Week 3

Hello everybody, my name is Kaila, and I am officially halfway done with my internship! This has gone by so incredibly fast in all the best ways. This week was a little bit slow, though. There’s an inspection coming soon, so a lot of this week was spent cleaning up some of the rooms.

Stella is looking silly with these glasses we found.

This is one of the times where I am beyond grateful that I am working in the lab with Stella because through these cleaning sections, we threw on some musical soundtracks and started vibing out and giggling about things that aren’t even funny.

In the second half of the day, I went over to the Skaggs building and continued working on brains.

Tuesday was an exciting day… It was Liliana’s birthday! So while she went out, all the other house girls decorated the house and made her a birthday surprise. We ate brownies and watched a movie all together.

Everyone is happy after a successful surprise

The next few days followed a similar pattern of going to Skaggs in the morning, working on mouse brains, having lunch with Stella, and making catheters.

Enjoying the sunlight!

Selene’s experiment has many, many mice, and they are all split into different categories. I finished one of the categories, and now I must go back to check and edit the past brains I did. This was fun to see some of the first brains that I did and see how not so good they were cause it showed major improvement in my computer skills, but in my understanding of the mouse brain itself.

Then I came across it… the first brain I ever did. And I couldn’t get it. After weeks of being here, I got pretty good at lining up these brains to the model, but I can promise that that brain is deformed, and I’m quite impressed that it was my first brain (did it look good? Absolutely not)

Mouse brain working

To end this week off on Friday, we went to the movie theater to watch Toy Story 5 for Liliana’s birthday, and on Saturday, we went to the farmers’ market and the pier.
