I just finished my second week here on Tybee island and I learned so much this week. I had so many cool experiences inside and outside of work which has been amazing.
Throughout the week I continued to work in the Science Centers sea camp. This week I felt like I learned a little more beca
use I was working with the older kids. For example we had an oceanography day where we taught the kids how to measure water quality by using various tools like a pH meter, refractometer and more. We even caught to do a squid dissection.
I also got to work upstairs on Friday not in sea camp which I was super excited about. At the start of the day I was taught about the feeding of all the tanks in the animals in them. As well as the labeling of all the systems and the protocols to ensure no parasites or anything that could harm the animals aren’t transported from tank to tank. Then after feeding all the animals I was able to do some shell care for the hatching Diamond Back Terrapins. I also got to see this cool flatworm that was found in the touch tank (non parasitic).
Outside of work I have been fishing a lot. As well as a hanging out with new friends. I even got to help with a sea turtle nest hatch on Saturday night which was such an amazing experience. I didn’t get any photos because the lights on the phone screen could disorient the turtles. Today I got to go surfing which was super fun until I got stung by a box jellyfish and then stung again while trying to get out of the water from the first one. Thankfully I was surfing right by the science center so I walked there to get some vinegar to spray on it.
I cant wait to see what next week entails!
