Hello everyone. This week for my internship, I was in the surgery department following Dr. Graville and Dr. Nye. They started surgeries by 8 a.m. so I showed up near 7:30. The drive to the clinic and back takes between 30 minutes to an hour because of the traffic. The first surgery I got to see was one where they had to take samples of the dogs liver and I got to see how Dr. Nye used a tiny camera to see where to grab the samples from. There were two surgeries that involved tying the dogs stomach to the side. One of them was because they removed the spleen. The other was more of an emergency surgery because the dog’s stomach was already twisted. Throughout the week, I got to see ortho surgeries dealing with the dogs CCL and fractured bone and saw how they added the metal plates to help with recovery. When they didn’t have surgeries, they had appointments which I was able to observe. They would be simple appointments like a recheck to see if the dog was healing properly and discussions about the next steps for surgery. On Saturday, I got to go with my Sister and her friends to see the first two episodes of The Summer I Turned Pretty. This was a pretty good week and I can’t wait for the next.
Thank you,
Valeria Hernandez
