Here comes our 3rd week working with the Rainbow Youth Center
Monday 23rd
Starting Monday, Kat and I worked on preparations for my Wednesday activity. The basic idea was for the youth to decorate a cookie representing how they see themselves or how they want to see themselves in the future. We went from grocery store to grocery store collecting ingredients we needed. Other than that, I did some work for our director and turned that in the same day.
Tuesday 24th
Free day, I walked around town and sat at a cafe, and worked on the therapy workbooks given to me by a local therapist.
Wednesday 25th
Coming into work, I started working on a social calendar for my director, then reaching around 4:00 pm, we got the kids to do the cookie activity, and they loved it. The kids worked for about an hour baking and decorating. I got to connect with the people more deeply with this activity, and noticed how different the people who come to the Rainbow Youth Center are, and understand them in a better way. As well, I finally met up with Luna, the therapist who works with RYC, and during our session, I learned what she does and if I want to pursue psychology, what I need to know, as well as learning what are key pointers are while working with clients.
Friday 27th
Waking up around 5 am, I got ready and packed my bags, then got picked up by our program manager, and we drove off to the Rainbow Youth Center, where we all gathered, getting ready to drive to Denver. The drive was long, but at the end of the day, we made it to our Airbnb and finally went to sleep.
Saturday 28th
On Saturday, the 28th, we planned to go to an amusement park, and I helped manage our routine while we were there, and while I was there, I read my therapy books. After the amusement park, I went to a strip mall, then had dinner at a place called “Noodle Company.”
Sunday 29th
We woke up early, and most of the youth marched in the parade. I had a lot of fun, as we marched in the parade, I got to experience pride and the community itself. Denver Pride had so much to offer, and getting to communicate with the community was so much different from Telluride. I was able to feel how strong the pride spirit was, and I got to meet people from all different communities. As the Parade ended, we went to a museum and checked out the Kent Monkman exhibit, which entailed an indigenous artist’s combat against French colonisers’ paintings of indigenous people.
Thank you so much for tuning in
