Hi everyone! My First week at my internship at the energy and geosciences institute at the university of Utah has been extremely fun. This week my mentor Ting had me and Sullivan, the other intern at my lab, work to understand what the Darcy Equation was and how we would be using it during the internship in order to determine the porosity of rocks and their suitability for them to act as carbon storage. I was able to understand that the equation solved for the permeability constant of a rock or sand when it is put in a tube with water flowing through it.
I also learned quite a bit about the trapping mechanisms required when using underground aquifers for carbon capture and storage in the Uinta basin. During this week in Salt Lake I also had a lab meeting where i met many other people working at my lab and planned out the field trip we are going to take the week after next to actually visit the Uinta basin and see how measurements are taken with seismometers in order to determine points where carbon capture and storage would be viable (places with a strong caprock and a lot of space to store so many tons of CO2).
During my free time this week I engaged in activities like hiking on some of the trails located nearest to the university of Utah, Lifting at my local gym every day, and getting coffee at the cafe right next to my apartment. Over the weekend I layed around and finished my book, mainly sitting on my porch where a tree partially blocks the sunlight and makes it an extremely comfortable spot. I thank the Pinhead Institute very much for the opportunity they have given me and my arrangements have exceeded my expectations so far.
