Hello everyone! My name is Rider Abbott. An intern out here at OSU!
I just finished up my very first week out here in the open fields of Oklahoma, and I’m loving it! Spending the days out at the Excelsior engineering building here at OSU. The first few days were a hodgepodge of meeting new people, getting acquainted with the space we are to work in for the next few weeks, and exploring the campus.
The Excelsior building here at OSU is the home base of OAIRE. Which is the Oklahoma Aerospace Institution for Research and Education. Here, I met my mentor, Tanner. He explained to us the importance of the work done here at OSU. OAIRE prides itself on being a global leader in the world of Aerospace industry.
We started out with paperwork, as any good engineering field has. There was an array of tests we had to take to ensure we could safely operate power tools, and another array of fun items they had within the workshop. Once that was finished, we jumped straight in.
We started the evening of the first day, meeting the team AREN, a group that has been tasked with developing and collecting data regarding kite tails and their drag, lift, and weight. In the previous year, they had shared about their experiments and studies. How certain tails have better control yet less lift and vice versa. However, all this data was only qualitative. The experiments yielded no quantitative data. Thus, they have returned for another year in a attempt to collect the missing data that other scientists around the world wished to see.
On another note, during our mornings at Excelsior, we had the honor of participating and helping with the casting of a glass weave composite. This composite, a series of glass fabric stacked on top of one another with a foam core, is to be used the following week for compression tests.

After the work within Excelsior was completed, I had the fun of wandering around campus. I still have yet to make it out towards the nearby lake for a game of frisbee golf, but that is sure to come at some point. Stillwater is a fun little town, with lots of little shops and foods stalls around every corner.

This week was slow but fun. I’d rather not have it any other way. But, this are bound to pick up, and when they do, I’ll be trying my best to keep up.
Till next time!
Go Pokes!
