Me cutting out retainers

If you are lucky enough to have had braces, you are lucky enough! I hear their cost could buy a teenager’s first car. I was lucky enough to have my smile perfected by Dr. Chuck at Alexander Orthodontics, Montrose, Colo.

Week three of my Internship was with Reading Orthodontic Group, which is close to my Wyomissing host house, and I have enjoyed the morning and evening cycle to and from work.

Arriving at ROG I walked into familiar territory, as I spent three years at Orthodontic appointments. I know the procedure and layout of Alexander Orthodontics like the back of my hand. Here at ROG it is similar but busier. There are ten people in the operatory, three doctors, 15 behind the scenes, and two technicians making retainers and equipment for braces downstairs.

On my first day after meeting everybody, I was taught procedures and helped in sanitation until I went to join the lab and learn more about appliances they create. Kevin then taught me how to do first rough cuts of retainers, this felt much like working on the whitening trays for Dr. Buttars at Elevated Dental, which I enjoyed. Returning to the operatory I observed more patients and learned the reasoning behind different levels of stress tension the wires use to perfect patient’s teeth.

Ben and Pricilla are home!!!

Wednesday I met Dr. Mauro, the dentist who introduced me to the entirety of Orthodontic Dentistry. Working with Dr. Mauro I was involved more in depth on the dentist’s role in an orthodontic office. Sitting in a new patient meeting I learned the amount that it was going to cost this family, which confirmed that you can buy a car with the same amount. During this meeting I saw the treatment diagnosis and how it can be created. While the treatment was being discussed I explained to the patient my braces experiences and how even if you don’t enjoy the experience, the outcome is beyond worth it.

No day five for me this week, this is the dentistry I dream of, no Fridays, 9-5, long weekends, and snapping out of it I realize I have many years at college ahead before I land the life of a dentist. I spent some time with Dr. Fred’s family again this week, and had an amazing dinner. This month has sped by, I am already at my final week with Dr. Andrea Smith.
