The article Casey and I read

The last week (and all the previous weeks) I spent in Boulder was amazing and I did not want it to end. It went by so fast, too fast. I loved every minute of it.

My last week at the CU Change Lab involved continuing to collect research data while the research participants exercised, and then saying goodbye to the research participants that I enjoyed meeting and talking to. I also met with Casey Gardiner one last time, and we read through, analyzed, and discussed another research article. This time the article was about delay discounting and the alcohol Stroop in heavy drinking adolescents. Delay discounting is the decline in the present value of a reward with delay to its receipt. The Stroop effect is

a phenomenon in which you must say the color of a word but not the name of the word; in the alcohol Stroop task, alcohol words are presented too. Delay discounting and the alcohol Stroop task proved that, “In adolescents, heavy alcohol use is associated with biased attentional processing of alcohol-related cues and a shorter-term focus in decision making.”

On my last day Audrey made Claire and me a delicious going away cake with blueberries and whip cream. I had an incredible and very enriching experience at the CU Change Lab. I also had the chance to go to a deaf event with Leigha, who worked in the CU Change Lab. I’d never been to a deaf event before, but I loved it, and I now plan on studying American Sign Language (ASL) while attending college.

The four-wheelers

After my last day at the lab, I went four wheeling with my great aunt and uncle, and we got lost! It was a little scary, but we eventually found our way back. Throughout my stay in Boulder, I made the time to visit the University of Northern Colorado, Colorado State University, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, University of Denver, and Colorado University of Denver. I now have a better idea of my top picks for colleges, and I’m very excited to begin applying.

This internship also gave me an idea of what it’s like to leave home, to be on my own, and to be a responsible adult. I’m very excited for my future, for what comes after graduation, and I’m ready for whatever life throws my way.
