Shadowing vet students and I in surgery.

Week four at the Auburn University Veterinary Teaching Hospital was very eventful. On Monday there were four emergency cases presented at the same time [emergencies are my favorite (emergency=excitement)]. These consisted of: a broken hind-limb on a Red Angus calf; possible BVD in a black Brangus calf; a breached birth in a Black Angus heifer; and a uterine prolapse in a Holstein cow.

Although the patients were in distress, I was very excited about the outcome of the morning. Perhaps the most exciting was the uterine prolapse. This occurs when the uterus of a cow does not contract properly after she gives birth. Consequently, the entirety of her uterus and other internal organs are exposed to the outside world. The treatment is fairly simple. Dr. Rush had the assistance of two technicians and a student and she was able to put the uterus back where it belongs by slowly “stuffing” everything back to it’s correct place.

Monday morning provided enough excitement and patients to keep everyone busy for the rest of the week. The remainder of the week consisted of treating those admitted on Monday, along with a few who were admitted throughout the week. The Red Angus calf had surgery on his broken leg and is still being treated. The Brangus calf tested positive for BVD and dermatophilus. He was unfortunately euthanized. The breached birth was determined to have happened because of heat stress, and even though the mother was saved, her calf was not so fortunate. Lastly, the Holstein with the uterine prolapse was sent home the same day she arrived at the hospital.
